In other races of interest: With 91 percent of the precincts throughout Georgia's U.S. Rep. District 10 reporting, incumbent U.S. Rep. Paul Broun has a clear victory over challenger Barry Fleming with 70 percent of the vote. Broun, who lives in Oconee County, carried Oconee with a massive lead over Fleming - 4824 to 1342. Broun now faces opposition from Democrat Bobby Saxon (who ran unopposed for his party's nomination).
In the 46th state Senate District, which covers portions of Walton and Clarke counties and all of Oconee County, Tommy Malcom lost his bid to unseat incumbent state Sen. Bill Cowsert. With 96 percent of precincts reporting in the 46th District, Cowsert has won with 60 percent of the vote. In Oconee, Cowsert won with 3456 votes to Malcom's 2643. Cowsert faces opposition in November from Sherry Jackson, a Bogart attorney.
More than 500 Democrats cast ballots in Oconee County where there were no locally contested races. Oconee's Democrats supported Jim Martin in the five-way race to determine who from their party will run against incumbent U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss in November. Statewide, Martin carried 34 percent of the vote (with 81 percent of precincts reporting) and trailed Vernon Jones who had 40 percent of the vote. Jones and Martin will likely face each other in an August runoff to see who will run against Chambliss.
