Oconee County Sheriff’s Deputy David Gilstrap, 42, late Thursday afternoon remained in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, after being struck by a car while directing traffic on Hog Mountain Road, early Thursday morning.   

Gilstrap remains on life support, according to Lt. Paul Cosper of the Georgia State Patrol. 

Georgia State Patrol received the call at 7:26 a.m.

The vehicle that hit Gilstrap was a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by an Oconee County woman, according to Cosper. 

The wreck is still under investigation. Cosper said he expects the GSP to release a report about the wreck Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred in front of the entrance to the Oconee County Primary School. School begins at 7:45 a.m.
